Backpack and pet lounge: Casual Canine Ultimate Backpack Carrier

As is so often the case, I owe this one to a reader. Heike wrote and asked if I’d seen a carrier on overstock.com that she was considering, and I told her no, and I likely wouldn’t pursue it because Chloe’s roughly twice as large as the Chihuahua pictured in the carrier’s photo. However, I liked how the side of her carrier expanded in the same way the Smart Space carrier does, and I was still gazing at it when  … Read more

Product review: New, larger Kobi Pet Carrier (and luggage wrap)

Just over a year ago, I posted a very positive review of the Kobi Pet Carrier: I liked its features, and loved how it expanded on demand (with a zippered gusset) from 18″ long to 21″ long, but regretted that even the larger of the two sizes available was too short, at 10″ tall, for Chloe (who’s 12″ tall at the shoulders). Kobi kindly let me offer it as a giveaway, and it went to reader Debra Lee, whose pup  … Read more

New in-cabin pet carrier: Smart Space by Brinkmann Pet

I’m updating this post yet again. It was first published on 10/5/11, and in late February 2013, reader Monique pointed out that the carrier I reviewed has apparently been replaced by one 2 inches shorter — 17″ long instead of an ungainly and, really, unworkable, 19″ long. That’s an intriguing size — not so much shorter than the large SturdiBag Chloe uses (18″ long) that it would cramp her, yet short enough to fit sideways under many airline seats, potentially allowing  … Read more

A side-by-side comparison: Large SturdiBag next to Sherpa Delta Deluxe Pet Carrier

I’ve said plenty of rude things about Sherpa carriers over the years, but I’ve only briefly owned two (the large- and medium-sized wheeled bags). That all changed at the end of December, when my husband and I decided to bring home a cat my parents had rescued but couldn’t, realistically speaking, keep. We had no idea how well Cora would handle the stress of travel, so I decided to buy a good quality carrier, and the best one I could  … Read more

Product review: TUMI’s Alpha pet carrier (or, how the other half lives)

I first heard about TUMI’s new pet carrier a couple of months ago, and posted a wistful link to it on Dog Jaunt’s Facebook page — it was a TUMI product, so I suspected it was something special in the world of pet carriers, but it cost $495, so it was out of my price range. The Lord loves a tryer, though, as a waiter in Ireland once told me, so I wrote to TUMI and asked if they’d send  … Read more

Product review: RUNNUR cross-body pack, for dog walking

I first heard about the RUNNUR pack in an e-mail message from Fido Friendly magazine, way back in May, and I wrote to the company asking for a sample to review. The product is not specifically meant for dog owners (it’s created, says the company, for “People on the Go: Bike, Skate, School, Work and Travel”), but as you’ll see, it’s an appealing option for dog walkers, laden as they are with poop bags, phone, water bottle, treats, etc. RUNNUR  … Read more

Crate fan, for those dog days of summer (remember them?)

I’m not calling this a product review, because it’s really just a note to say that we used the Metro Air Force crate fan (Model CCF-1) this summer, and were pleased with it. Although Seattle is cool enough not to make air conditioning a standard home feature, there are a couple of weeks every summer when I seriously consider putting A/C in myself, by hand, with a freaking Sawzall. On those hot days, I worry about Chloe in her crate (we leave  … Read more

Securing your pet’s carrier to the top of your wheeled suitcase: The Bag Bungee

When I reviewed the Sleepypod Air pet carrier, I mentioned that the width of its luggage strap (or slip over sleeve, or pass-through slot, or piggyback strap) was controlled by a pair of zippers that “sometimes shift, allowing the bag to swivel around on top of the supporting suitcase. Happily, Chloe is a dog with a sunny outlook on life, and doesn’t lose sleep over sudden swoops. I suggest looking back frequently as you roll along to make sure everything’s in  … Read more

Product review: SturdiProducts’ Incognito Pet Carrier

I was asked about this carrier — which I hadn’t seen — by a reader who has a larger small dog, like Chloe, and was looking for an around-town tote. Large totes are hard to find (I use Wagwear’s canvas tote or an OllyDog Olly Tote for the times when Chloe can be visible, and PetEgo’s messenger bag for the times when she can’t), so I was eager to see this new bag, made by the same company that makes Chloe’s beloved  … Read more

Product review: The One Bag, extendable and collapsible

Yet again, I have you guys to thank for this one: What did I think of The One Bag, asked a reader [Maureen] whose name is now lost in the mists of Facebook? I scrabbled around on Google, found the bag, and thought that I’d really like to see it in person. I was intrigued because, like the Kobi Pet Carrier I reviewed in March, the carrier expands in length on demand. Unlike the Kobi carrier, it can be collapsed into a tidy  … Read more
