Flying with an in-cabin dog: Adding a dog to your plane reservation

A couple of days ago, we bought tickets on JetBlue to travel to New York City later this summer. I have to go to a conference, we both want to see some friends — five days should cover it, right? Well, it’s a six-day trip now, because after I made our on-line reservations I called back to add Chloe to my ticket (as I always do), and learned that our outgoing flight already had its full complement of in-cabin pets (all airlines, except Allegiant, have a limited number of available spaces; only four in-cabin pets are allowed on JetBlue flights).… Read the rest

Frontier Airlines now allows pets to fly in-cabin

Frontier Airlines announced today that small pets (including dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, or small household birds within the U.S. — only dogs and cats to international destinations) may travel in-cabin with their owners. There is a $75 (each way) fee, which makes the policy competitive with Southwest’s policy.… Read the rest

Alaska and Horizon now accept soft-sided in-cabin pet carriers

Until recently, Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air officially only accepted hard-sided in-cabin pet carriers (all other U.S. airlines that welcome in-cabin pets accept soft-sided carriers). Now, however, both airlines will allow you to bring your pet on board in a soft-sided carrier, and they’ve cut pet owners a break on the height: Soft-sided carriers may be 10 inches tall, 2.5 inches taller than the maximum allowed for hard-sided carriers.… Read the rest

Who knew that there were still DC-9s out there? It turns out that Delta has quite a few of these planes of my youth, though they’re likely to be retired in favor of more fuel-efficient alternatives. Which seat works best with an in-cabin dog? [Delta 757-300]

Although I have nothing but bitter things to say about the space available for humans on this plane, Chloe seemed to have an okay flight.

Delta’s 757 (-300 series) planes are divided into First Class and Economy Class. I only caught a glimpse of First Class as I was walking through, but the under-seat spaces didn’t look impossible for an in-cabin dog.… Read the rest
