Reader’s report: Traveling to Peru with a small dog

I’ll just admit up front that this is a low point in my life as a blogger: Reader Stefanie sent me two fantastic messages about this trip a year ago — yes, in June 2015 — and I am only now posting them on the blog. I have apologized to her, of course, and now we will all take a deep, cleansing breath together, swig from a mug of green tea, and stride mindfully into a future of timeliness.

Chloe’s Clicks: This week’s best dog travel links

Too many weeks have gone by, and the heap of pet travel links is spilling onto the floor. Time to get to work:

The oldest link in the stack is also the saddest. Blogger Helen Fazio, who writes Travels With My Dog, posted a cautionary tale about a friend’s dog, a retractable leash, and a really horrible death. Not too long ago, I wrote a quick post on Dog Jaunt’s Facebook page about a similar near-miss I had just seen at  … Read more

Chloe’s Clicks: This week’s best dog travel links

This episode of Chloe’s Clicks is long overdue, but I think that just makes it tastier, like giving the lemons more time to infuse the grain alcohol. The oldest link is from Huffington Post, and points you to five dog-friendly hiking trails in and around Los Angeles. Also from Huff Post? A post about three dog-friendly hotels in Portland, OR — I’d add to the list the Heathman Hotel, our favorite, and the funky Ace Hotel.

In the Bay Area, the  … Read more

Chloe’s Clicks: This week’s best dog travel links

This week’s collection of links is half about dog-friendly places to eat, and half miscellaneous. Starting, naturally, with the places to eat, check out Zagat‘s suggestions for dog-friendly restaurants in Los Angeles, and petswelcome.com‘s picks in Toronto. Join me, too, in celebrating Seattle’s first steps towards copying Portland’s massively successful food-truck pods — I’ve written a couple of posts about individual trucks, but this Seattle Times article provides helpful info about six pods, and where to find them. Why am  … Read more

Chloe’s Clicks: This week’s best dog travel links

This has been an outstanding couple of weeks for dog travel links. Leading the pack is the Take Paws team, which wrote a bunch of great posts, but I want to highlight their post about U.S. national parks (so often not terribly dog-friendly) and national forests (overlooked, but beautiful and more welcoming to dogs) and their post about visiting several dog-friendly Russian River wineries.

Sticking with the West Coast, check out this post from Young Hollywood listing eight dog-friendly places to  … Read more

Pet relief areas at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)

LAX has five [now four, per reader Kate’s report (see below)] pet relief areas, and when we visited sunny SoCal last week I spent an afternoon visiting them all. Here’s what I’ve learned — and here’s a map of LAX to consult.

Between Terminals 1 and 2

Walking counter-clockwise around LAX’s arrivals level, the first pet relief area you encounter is located between Terminals 1 and 2. If you arrive at Terminal 1, exit the baggage claim area and turn right; if  … Read more

Chloe’s Clicks: This week’s (and last week’s too!) best dog travel links

I have such a backlog of dog travel links for you (two weeks’ worth, plus a little!) that the only thing to do is tell you about them in the order they reached me — starting with the wonderful Maggie in Venice, mentioned in previous Chloe’s Clicks. The Imbodens have returned to Venice with Maggie, their Bearded Collie, and their recent posts include a view of their new home, a post about the logistics of flying with Maggie from New  … Read more

Chloe’s Clicks: Dog travel links we liked this week

This week led off with a bunch of lists. Huffington Post published a list of dog-friendly restaurants and hotels in Los Angeles; Sunset Magazine published a list of ten dog-friendly vacation ideas in the western United States (including Tucson, the San Juan Islands, Coronado Island, the Oregon coast, Carmel-by-the-Sea, Los Angeles, and a Walla Walla winery); and Yak & Natter reported on their visit to four of Britain’s ten best dog-friendly beaches.

In other news, Sign On San Diego published an  … Read more

Surf was up this week, and dogs were hangin’ 18 at the fifth annual Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition in San Diego. “The dogs are divided into weight classes and then judged on length of ride, confidence and overall ability. They have ten minutes and will be scored on their top two waves.” Heat One (for small dogs) was won by Abbie, an Australian Kelpie. Here’s a picture of a dog learning to  … Read more

Dog-friendly luxury: Kimpton Hotels

The Kimpton Hotel Group has 54 properties in 16 states, and they’re all pet-friendly. We’ve stayed in a handful, in Boston, Seattle and Portland, and each has been a delight. They’re typically small- to medium-sized boutique hotels, each with a distinctive decor and an excellent attitude towards pets.

For starters, Kimpton hotels don’t charge a fee or require a deposit for visiting pets, and there is no limit on how much your pet can weigh. Each member hotel puts together its own  … Read more
