Packs flat when crate is collapsed: Thumbs up for Dexas Popware water bowl

As you know by now, we travel with Chloe’s Midwest metal wire crate, so she has a cozy and secure lair to curl up in when we need to go somewhere without her (I realize that doesn’t work for every dog owner — we are lucky to have a dog who likes her crate, falls asleep in it, and doesn’t make a fuss when we’re absent).

The wire sides of the crate are ideal not only because they discourage scraping (the  … Read more

PetEgo’s Pet Tube: Chloe’s current car safety solution

For three years, Chloe’s car safety solution was a combination of the medium-sized Snoozer Lookout car booster seat (strapped to the car with the right rear safety belt) and a harness-and-belt that she wore while in it (clipped to the right rear “latch bar” of our car). I felt pretty good about that approach, right up to the day that I watched a series of videos filmed by the Center for Pet Safety, showing what happens to a crash-test dummy  … Read more

Chloe’s Clicks: This week’s best dog travel links

“This week” is a bit of a fiction, I know, given that the oldest link in here is dated January 25, but a more accurate headline wouldn’t be nearly so catchy. The link is certainly attention-grabbing: Australia turns out to be darned pet-unfriendly in many ways, but the Sunshine Coast Daily reports that the Sunshine Coast Council (representing a large urban area north of Brisbane) recently decided to let local café owners choose whether to allow dogs to join diners in  … Read more

Chloe’s Clicks: This, um, month’s best dog travel links

Holy cats, this Chloe’s Clicks is way overdue! I’ll just plunge in with the oldest link in the collection, a post about a private jet company in the U.K. that invites your pet to join you in the main cabin. On the plus side: Your pet’s with you in the main cabin, and she has her “very own leather-upholstered seat, strapped in for safety, all while enjoying a window view.” On the minus side: If you have to ask, you  … Read more

Packing your dog’s gear for travel: An update, and a collaboration

I’ve written several posts about the dog gear we bring with us on trips, and how we pack it for car and airplane travel, but when Gigi Griffis (who writes The Ramble, and whose posts about her current trip across Europe with Luna, her Schnauzer-Yorkie mix, have frequently been featured in past Chloe’s Clicks) asked if I’d like to contribute to a collection of posts about packing for dog travel, I happily agreed. Things change over time, after all — new  … Read more

Crate fan, for those dog days of summer (remember them?)

I’m not calling this a product review, because it’s really just a note to say that we used the Metro Air Force crate fan (Model CCF-1) this summer, and were pleased with it. Although Seattle is cool enough not to make air conditioning a standard home feature, there are a couple of weeks every summer when I seriously consider putting A/C in myself, by hand, with a freaking Sawzall. On those hot days, I worry about Chloe in her crate (we leave  … Read more

Tips from Dog Jaunt readers: Packing a crate, improving chances for in-cabin carrier

I have a stack of great stuff in my in-box from Dog Jaunt readers, and I’m making progress on sharing it with you. Here are two tips from a couple of fellow travelers, and one from me.

Packing a crate

As you may already know, Chloe is crate-trained, and we carry a medium-sized version of her big metal crate with us when we travel. It occupies half of her enormous Samsonite suitcase, but I’ve never really begrudged the weight or the space  … Read more

Chloe’s digs: A consistent set-up for a small dog in a hotel room

It occurred to me this morning that I’ve told you in a number of posts how I pack for Chloe, but I’ve never shown you what the stuff we’ve packed looks like once we settle into a hotel room. Here are some photos from our current hotel (I’ll be writing more about it later, after I’ve had a chance to explore thoroughly).

Please note how Chloe is not currently lounging in her crate

What you see is a 24″ long Midwest  … Read more

PetEgo’s Pet Dome: A carry-on lounge for your in-cabin dog

In September 2009, I wrote a quick post about a PetEgo carrier that I yearned for but didn’t actually need: the Pet at Work Travel System, a backpack that holds a laptop and a small dog and a collapsible crate. And there it might have ended, but for reader Christie, who wrote to me and asked whether I thought it might work as an in-cabin carrier for their dog, traveling with them to Paris. As you’ll see in the comments,  … Read more

Chloe’s Clicks: This week’s best dog travel links

This week’s collection starts with a link from Santos L Halper about the logistics of traveling with a crated dog from Vancouver, B.C. to Paris. I love the details, and I love knowing (from an e-mail I received) that Santos the whippet is now investigating Paris’s parks. An early report: “Carousel de Louvre has been the best for a runner like me. Parc des Buttes Chaumont was a bust (too hilly). Hope to get to the Bois de Vincennes soon.”
