Chloe’s Clicks: This week’s best dog travel links

Just a few links for you this week, but they’re all worth a click — starting with a SmartMoney article about how pet travel is a big business, and growing (fair enough, and I enjoyed the details about the author’s trip to Portland, OR with Minnie, a Border Collie/Papillon mix, but have any of you ever encountered “horrified looks from fellow [plane] passengers”? Anyone? I get either oblivious, mildly curious, or besottedly enthusiastic). The last paragraphs of the SmartMoney article  … Read more

Minneapolis, MN dog-friendly hotel: Kimpton’s Grand Hotel

Chloe and I stayed this past weekend at a new Kimpton hotel, the Grand Hotel in Minneapolis. I should mention that I paid my own way at the Grand Hotel — I’ll always let you know when something I’m reviewing has been paid for by someone else. I didn’t know quite how new it was until I inquired, on check-out, but I’d had my suspicions from the beginning. It has the Kimpton quirky chic in only a few places  … Read more

Minneapolis-St. Paul off-leash dog parks: Look for ones that don’t require a permit

Minneapolis has five off-leash dog parks, but you can only use them if your dog has a special permit. Tourists can either run the risk of incurring a fine or seek alternatives.

One alternative is St. Paul’s off-leash dog  … Read more

Metro Transit’s pet policy, according to the customer service representative I spoke to, is that small  … Read more

Dog-friendly Minneapolis-St. Paul

When I visited the Twin Cities a few weeks ago, I looked for dog-oriented local guidebooks at my favorite local bookstore and came away empty-handed. Curses, I thought, and I cursed again when Amazon too had no useful results to offer. All the cursing could have been avoided, however, if I had known then about Sidewalk Dog, which describes itself as “the go-to community guide to dog-friendly businesses, special events, stores, restaurants and travel opportunities in the Twin Cities area and  … Read more

Traveling by car-share (Zipcar etc.) with a dog

Zipcar operates a membership-based car-sharing service in over fifty cities in the U.S., Canada and the U.K. Though the company makes mistakes (hello? pulled out of L.A.??), the car-sharing concept is terrific. Zipcar originally banned pets from its cars, but its current pet policy is sensible:

We understand that Fido and Tigger need to go to the vet on occasion. Pets are only allowed into Zipcars in locked pet carriers and members are responsible for the removal of any residual  … Read more
