Getting into, and out of, England with an in-cabin dog: It’s complicated

We’re planning a long stay in Paris this fall, and for the sake of the blog I decided to fly home not from Paris but from London. Going through that process, I thought, would really help other travelers with dogs — and it is a process, since dogs are not allowed to fly in-cabin into the U.K. If they’re on a plane, they have to be traveling as manifested cargo (as always with posts on this blog, I’m talking about  … Read more

Reader’s tip for flying with an anxious dog: Chocolate (plus a report on Delta’s carry-on policy)

Reader Hannah left a comment, oh, so long ago, on my post about the major U.S. airlines’ carry-on policies, reporting a conversation that she’d had with a Delta rep about traveling with her pup Oliver from Asia to the U.S. Kindly overlooking the fact that I only responded, ahem, two months later, she posted a follow-up report about their trip. The carry-on part is interesting, but I’m putting it at the end because the part that knocked my socks off  … Read more

Kobi Pet Carrier + mesh luggage wrap giveaway winner

This was by far the most popular Dog Jaunt giveaway ever — 85 of you entered to win, and that means the comments section on the giveaway post contains a wealth of excellent dog travel tips. I have learned so much over the past week — thank you, and thank you, too, to the kind souls who praised the blog.

Giveaway: New, larger Kobi Pet Carrier + mesh luggage wrap ($139 value)

About a month ago, I posted a review of the new, larger Kobi Pet Carrier (and the very new — in fact, not yet released — mesh luggage wrap). I liked it very much, you’ll remember, and I told you that I’d be buying one for Chloe. The carrier is big enough to accommodate a large small dog like my girl, but it still fits under an airplane seat — and the three extra inches you can add to its  … Read more

R.I.P.: Pet Airways pet airline

I’m updating this 7/12/09 post because it looks like Pet Airways has finally turned its face to the wall. Its website isn’t functioning, and its Facebook and Twitter pages haven’t been updated since Winter 2011. That’s a shame. They never did have any reported issues with the things I was concerned about (quality of kennels, possibility of escape from care). The comments I saw over the couple of years they were active objected to the expense of the tickets, but  … Read more

Reader’s report: Departing the U.K. with an in-cabin pet

Visiting the U.K. with a small pet is a good news/bad news situation. You start with good news: Back in 2012, the quarantine rules changed and it’s now no harder to meet the U.K.’s import requirements than it is to meet those of the rest of the European Union (well, with some differences, including a requirement that dogs be treated for tapeworm not less than 24 hours and not more than 120 hours before arriving in the U.K.).

Product review: New, larger Kobi Pet Carrier (and luggage wrap)

Just over a year ago, I posted a very positive review of the Kobi Pet Carrier: I liked its features, and loved how it expanded on demand (with a zippered gusset) from 18″ long to 21″ long, but regretted that even the larger of the two sizes available was too short, at 10″ tall, for Chloe (who’s 12″ tall at the shoulders). Kobi kindly let me offer it as a giveaway, and it went to reader Debra Lee, whose pup  … Read more

Reader’s report: Update on traveling with a large small dog, in an XL SturdiBag carrier

Once you get the routine down, it’s easy for those of us with small dogs (say, under 10 lbs.) to fly together in-cabin. Heck, it’s pretty straightforward to fly with a biggish small dog like Chloe, who weighs between 13 and 15 lbs. and measures 12″ tall at her shoulders — though on a number of occasions I’ve had to be a vigorous advocate for the large SturdiBag carrier. But what about those of us who fly with even bigger  … Read more

Product review: TUMI’s Alpha pet carrier (or, how the other half lives)

I first heard about TUMI’s new pet carrier a couple of months ago, and posted a wistful link to it on Dog Jaunt’s Facebook page — it was a TUMI product, so I suspected it was something special in the world of pet carriers, but it cost $495, so it was out of my price range. The Lord loves a tryer, though, as a waiter in Ireland once told me, so I wrote to TUMI and asked if they’d send  … Read more

How to fly with an in-cabin dog: Fido Friendly blog post (4/30/10)

I wrote this post for the wonderful Fido Friendly blog, back in April 2010. I’ve linked to it from a Dog Jaunt post on the same topic, but the link is now fatally broken, and I can’t find the original Fido Friendly post on line. I’m posting it again here, because it’s still good stuff.

Travelers with dogs small enough to fit under an airplane seat don’t have to wave good-bye as their pet’s crate is rolled away, or worry about  … Read more
