The Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Ferry: Dogs allowed

In an earlier post, I mentioned taking the Hampton Jitney to Boston by way of the Port Jefferson ferry. Small dogs in carriers are allowed on the Hampton Jitney buses, but what if you’re not taking the Hampton Jitney? Can dogs travel on the Port Jefferson ferry? The answer is not on the ferry website, so I wrote and asked. Here’s the official word: “Dogs are allowed on the ferry, and there is no charge for them. They must be on a leash or in a carrier and they are not allowed in the main cabin where the food is served.”

The Orient Point Ferry is a great way to travel to Long Island with a dog. We have taken generations of family dogs from CT to Long Island on the New London/Orient Ferry. It sounds like the Port Jeff/Bridgeport Ferry would be as friendly to the canine family members.

Thanks so much, Pam! I just called the Orient Point Ferry, and they confirmed that dogs are allowed on board for no additional fee, but they must be on a leash or in a carrier, and must stay in “designated areas.” I suspect that just means that they can’t go into food service areas, but the customer service rep said to ask the crew for more details. I don’t know if the search engine will find your comment, so I’m going to write a separate post about the Orient Point/Cross Sound Ferry with more details.

I have traveled on the PJ Ferry with a dog (standard poodle). Dogs are welcome on the ferry, BUT they must remain on the outside deck. There is seating, and some roof-shelter, but means that you and Pup will be wet or cold if it is wet or cold out. It is a delightful ride in good weather.

Thanks for your comment, Louise! It’s so helpful to hear from someone who’s been there and done it.
