Let’s be honest. I started collecting these links on September 2, so this is really an entire month’s collection. By now it’s old news that TripAdvisor posted a list of its ten most pet-friendly hotels in the U.S. — the algorithm is a little sketchy (“accommodations which have four or more circles out of five on TripAdvisor, and feature the greatest number of TripAdvisor traveler comments describing them as pet- or dog-friendly”), but I loved learning about The Paw House Inn, a Vermont hotel that charges extra for visitors without a dog.… Read the rest

This week led off with a bunch of lists. Huffington Post published a list of dog-friendly restaurants and hotels in Los Angeles; Sunset Magazine published a list of ten dog-friendly vacation ideas in the western United States (including Tucson, the San Juan Islands, Coronado Island, the Oregon coast, Carmel-by-the-Sea, Los Angeles, and a Walla Walla winery); and Yak & Natter reported on their visit to four of Britain’s ten best dog-friendly beaches.… Read the rest
Visiting the northern Brittany coast sounds completely delightful — Mont St. Michel, Paimpol, the pink granite coast — but several recent articles have revealed serious problems with Brittany’s northern beaches, especially in the Côtes-d’Armor department. Algae, washing up on shore and decaying, has made some beaches perilous:
Harmless while in water, the algae form dangerous gases — notably hydrogen sulfide, with its characteristic rotten-egg smell — when they wash up on land and decay.… Read the rest
