Product review: Alite Acorn Everyday Tote for organizing pet gear

I’m happy to report that I’ve found a new, excellent dog travel tote, the Acorn Everyday Tote from Alite. The only downside is that it may be falling off Alite’s product list. It’s not in their online catalogue, and that’s never a good sign. However, the company’s bricks-and-mortar store in San Francisco has “a lot” of back stock of the bag, in different colors, and it’s still available through Amazon (currently, the red is full price and the blue, which  … Read more

Collapsible carrier for traveling with a pet on public transit

I was gathering gear to pack for our trip to Paris — but this could apply equally well to New York or any other city where small pets in carriers are allowed on public transit — and once again I had to decide how to juggle my need for a purse (to carry all my gear, plus a substantial amount of Chloe’s gear) and the need to bring along a dog carrier for use on the metro or bus.

Taking your big dog on New York City’s subway: Options for big carriers

I’ve singled out NYC in the title of this post because I hear about this issue in connection with that city’s subway — and here’s why: The rules for bringing a pet onto the New York City subway say only that your pet must be “enclosed in a container and carried in a manner which would not annoy other passengers.” They do not include the words “small” or “lap.”

New Yorkers have noticed both of those things, and they search for  … Read more

Win a gorgeous TUMI pet carrier — and dig two water wells in Haiti

About a week ago, I posted a rapturous review of the new pet carrier from TUMI, and then left you with a mystery. Under my rules, I cannot keep products worth more than $50, and the TUMI pet carrier, at $495, is well over that limit. I either have to return the carrier to TUMI, or give it away — but I told you that I was doing neither of those things, and that you would be excited by the  … Read more

Product review: TUMI’s Alpha pet carrier (or, how the other half lives)

I first heard about TUMI’s new pet carrier a couple of months ago, and posted a wistful link to it on Dog Jaunt’s Facebook page — it was a TUMI product, so I suspected it was something special in the world of pet carriers, but it cost $495, so it was out of my price range. The Lord loves a tryer, though, as a waiter in Ireland once told me, so I wrote to TUMI and asked if they’d send  … Read more

An alternative to a wheeled carrier, for your larger in-cabin pet

If you have a very small dog — say, under 10 lbs. — you have it made, as far as flying goes. There are any number of charming over-the-shoulder carriers that slip easily under your seat, and if you (like me) have an iffy back, you can find wheeled carriers that also work well. If I were you, I’d buy the Creature Leisure Pet Pilot XL, and call it done. [1/31/13 Phooey!! It looks like this product has been discontinued.] In  … Read more

Incognito tote giveaway winner

This tote clearly grabbed your attention — 53 of you (the highest number ever for a Dog Jaunt giveaway!) entered to win it. Although only one person ends up with the tote, we all win, as they say, because your comments with your ideas of things to do in-town with your pup were terrific. Thank you so much — I’ll gather them into a post tomorrow, so they can easily be found again by later readers.

Giveaway: SturdiProducts’ Incognito pet tote ($65 value)

Last Friday, I posted a review of the Incognito tote from SturdiProducts. It’s a roomy tote — roomy enough, in fact, to hold your dog, her leash, and a small purse’s worth of your own gear — and it’s remarkably discreet. I bought one for myself, after posting the review.

SturdiProducts sent me the tote in maroon (“Bordeaux,” they call it). It costs $65, so I am obliged by my own rules to give it away. My thanks  … Read more

Product review: SturdiProducts’ Incognito Pet Carrier

I was asked about this carrier — which I hadn’t seen — by a reader who has a larger small dog, like Chloe, and was looking for an around-town tote. Large totes are hard to find (I use Wagwear’s canvas tote or an OllyDog Olly Tote for the times when Chloe can be visible, and PetEgo’s messenger bag for the times when she can’t), so I was eager to see this new bag, made by the same company that makes Chloe’s beloved  … Read more

An alternative canvas pet tote, from Land’s End

Alternative to what, you ask? We have a canvas tote from Wagwear that I reviewed in August 2009. It’s still available, it’s still an admirable product, and it now comes in a third size (XL, measuring 15Hx17Lx8W). It’s still pricey, too, so I was happy to see a canvas pet tote on the Lands’ End site yesterday.

The Canvas Tote Pet Carrier comes in a limited set of colors — off-white canvas with either red or navy trim  … Read more
