Across the U.S., staying in pet-friendly La Quinta and Drury hotels

Chloe and I had some experience with La Quinta and Drury hotels when we began our cross-country road trip (here’s my post about the La Quinta near O’Hare, and here’s one about the Drury Hotel near the Nashville airport), but we had a lot more when we ended, and it was all good.

As you know from previous posts, we recently drove from Tampa to Seattle along the southern and western edges of the  … Read more

Two dog-friendly hotels with vintage charm in the Texas hinterland

Actually, “hinterland” might be an understatement. Chloe and I and our friend Chandler recently drove from Tampa to Seattle the long way, via Palm Springs, a route that includes the entire width of Texas. Day 14 in Texas (I exaggerate, but not by much) took us from San Antonio nearly to El Paso, and for most of that day we were so far behind the back of beyond that our phones just gave up. The situation (please note that I don’t call  … Read more

Chloe’s Clicks: This week’s best dog travel links

It’s just a glorious day here in the Pacific Northwest, and, fittingly, this week’s clicks are a bouquet of cheer and inspiration. The first one is from the PNW, in fact — Go Pet Friendly hosted a great guest post about staying at the former officers’ quarters of Fort Worden, just outside Port Townsend, a drive and a ferry ride away from Seattle (remember the movie An Officer and a Gentleman? yep, that’s the place). Four of the little houses  … Read more

Chloe’s Clicks: This, um, month’s best dog travel links

Holy cats, this Chloe’s Clicks is way overdue! I’ll just plunge in with the oldest link in the collection, a post about a private jet company in the U.K. that invites your pet to join you in the main cabin. On the plus side: Your pet’s with you in the main cabin, and she has her “very own leather-upholstered seat, strapped in for safety, all while enjoying a window view.” On the minus side: If you have to ask, you  … Read more

Citizen Canine dog-walking hip pack giveaway winner

Thank you to everyone who entered the giveaway I announced last Monday for a fully-loaded Citizen Canine dog-walking hip pack! I loved your recommendations for dog-friendly restaurants, attractions and hotels — which I’ll list below, so they’re more easily found than in the comments on the giveaway post — and I loved your enthusiasm. Several of you entered the giveaway in every way possible, and many of you sent in three or four entries.

The winner, in fact, is one of  … Read more

Austin, TX public transit: No pet dogs allowed

I was reading last night about the many fun things to do in Austin, including grazing at the fabulous (and dog-friendly) Sunset Valley farmer’s market, and it reminded me to call Austin’s Capital Metro this morning to find out about their pet policy. Cap Metro operates buses, streetcars, and now a brand-new rail line in the Austin area, but two separate customer service representatives told me that only service dogs are allowed on board. [Since I first wrote this post,  … Read more

Travel book review: Eileen Barish’s Doin’ series

I don’t know Eileen Barish, but I want her life: the dates of her books listed on Amazon indicate that she spent a number of years writing dog travel books (the Doin’ series), then changed direction and started a series of guidebooks about lodging in various European countries’ monasteries (punctuated, a couple of years ago, with a book about “luxury resort and destination spas” in the U.S.). How fun!

This post talks about her Doin’ series (the titles are in the  … Read more
