Back in 2009, I reviewed the large-sized Bergan Comfort Carrier (it also comes in small), and concluded that it was well-designed but poorly made — it’s inexpensive, so it would be a reasonable choice for a trip or two, but not my pick for repeated use. Back in September 2010, I reported that the height of Southwest’s under-seat spaces, at least on a 737 -700 series plane, was 11 inches. In December 2010, however, reader David alerted me that on his flight, the under-seat space was reduced to 8.5 inches by a life-vest container. Unlike other U.S. airlines, Southwest does not stipulate what size carrier it will accept for in-cabin pets. Instead, it has published the dimensions of the under-seat space available to travelers. Southwest has a fleet of Boeing 737s (the -300, -500 and -700 series), and apparently the same measurement applies to all of its planes.

Southwest Airlines announced today that customers can begin purchasing tickets on June 1 for their dogs or cats, for in-cabin travel on flights starting June 17, 2009. This makes Dog Jaunt happy, since Southwest had been our favorite airline until we began traveling with Chloe.
