East Coast luxury: Four “mansion hotels” that allow pet dogs

Back in January, this article from CNN (“8 elegant U.S. mansion hotels“) caught my eye — or, more accurately, the combination of the headline and the photo of Newport’s gorgeous Chanler Hotel caught my eye. Surely some of those beauties must be pet-friendly, I thought, and this weekend I finally made the time to find out.

It turns out that five of the eight featured hotels do allow pet dogs to join their owners. The  … Read more

Pet relief area at Greenville, SC’s Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP)

Southwest flies into the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport, so I chose to fly there for a recent trip to Asheville, NC (the scenery between Greenville and Asheville was so lovely that the hour and a half drive felt much shorter). There is no mention of a pet relief area on GSP’s website, and when I inquired at the airport police station, I was told just to use one of the many patches of grass outside.

You’ll deplane on the upper level of  … Read more

Reader’s report: Pet relief areas at the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) and the Charleston International Airport (CHS)

Last week I posted half of reader Mia’s report from a recent trip (“Flying with an in-cabin dog on a Delta CRJ-200“). Here’s the other half, describing the results of her searches for pet relief areas at the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) and the Charleston International Airport (CHS).

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport

According to the website, DCA has four pet relief areas: Two outside Terminal A at either end of the big traffic half-circle, one outside Terminal B across from  … Read more

Chloe’s Clicks: This week’s best dog travel links

I have two weeks’ worth of dog travel links to tell you about, so sit down, shut up and hang on, as the bumper sticker says. This time of year, it’s all about the winter getaways, starting with a petswelcome.com post about dog-friendly hotels in Miami, Vermont and Monterey, and another post from the same folks about dog-friendly things to do in beautiful Santa Barbara. Kim Swidler, from timesunion.com, wrote a quick note about the Kiawah Island Golf Resort (located just south  … Read more

The hottest pet travel news this week is from the happiest place on earth: A new Best Friends Pet Resort, located near Disneyworld (in Lake Buena Vista, across from the Port Orleans Resort) and meant to board dogs and other pets accompanying visitors to the Magic Kingdom, is now taking reservations for stays starting on August 27, 2010. The new facility is enormous (over 50,000 square feet, including “17,000 square feet of air-conditioned indoor space, 10,000 square feet  … Read more

Charleston, SC public transit: No pet dogs allowed

Charleston, South Carolina is a lovely, historic place to visit — but you won’t be using public transportation to get around, because CARTA (Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority) does not allow pet dogs on its buses, even in carriers.

Independent providers offer tours of the historic area, and organize trips to Fort Sumter and historic plantations outside the city, but most are not pet-friendly (including the ubiquitous Gray Line tour buses). One shining exception is “Doin’ The Charleston”  … Read more

Chloe’s Clicks: Dog travel links we liked this week

I’m happy to report that this week a favorite blogger posted an article about a favorite city. Travelling Pets is a Canadian couple traveling in Europe with their Miniature Schnauzer — I love their posts, and I love Stockholm, so an article from them about dog-friendly Stockholm gets my vote.

I write a lot about flying with small dogs, but you can get your dog to Europe on a cruise ship if you’re willing to hock the house and book a  … Read more
