Chloe’s car harness: Keeping your small dog safe on a road trip

Chloe in the van

Driving from Sarasota to Tampa this weekend, I realized that although I’ve described my preferred away-from-home car safety set-up for Chloe (a 3-in-1 vest harness plus the strap from a PetBuckle kit), I’ve never given you a picture of it in action. So here’s a picture of Chloe in my father-in-law’s van, just after a very satisfying trip to one of her favorite dog parks. It’s already hot in Florida, so she’s resting on the Zentek  … Read more

Photo Friday: Dog travel photos wanted!

This week’s photo is one of mine, taken shortly after we installed Chloe’s Snoozer car seat in the back of my station wagon. The picture says it all — the dog just loves road trips.

Please send me links to your favorite dog travel photos! They’ll get listed below, for everyone to click on and enjoy. Here’s how it works:

Travel book review: The Pet Travel and Fun Authority

I kept hearing about this book, last published in 2001 and now out of print, and I finally bought a copy for myself. I was surprised to find that it’s a directory more than a guidebook — there is a bit of text at the beginning of each state’s listings, briefly describing the editors’ favorite dog-related activities in that state, but the bulk of the book consists of lists of dog-friendly places to “sit” (restaurants and shops — not very  … Read more

Driving to another state with a dog

This is a follow-up to yesterday’s post about U.S. airlines’ requirements for health certificates. That post was about flying from one state to another; this post is about driving across state lines.

Officially, the rules are the same, except that the airlines’ requirements don’t enter the picture. Officially, you need to research the rules each state has promulgated about the timing of rabies vaccinations, whether a health certificate is required, and when the certificate has to be issued. And once again,  … Read more

Traveling by car with a small dog: How it works

Last weekend, Chloe and I flew to Chicago to meet my oldest niece, just finishing her first year at college. I rented a minivan and we filled it with my niece’s stuff and drove to Minneapolis-St. Paul. Chloe and I had driven together before for two or three hours at a time, but that was in my own car, equipped with Chloe’s beloved Snoozer Lookout, and leaving from our own driveway. This took more preparation.

Waterbite portable water for dogs

Waterbites are packaged portions of a beef-flavored hydrating gel for dogs that can be stored at room temperature for up to 18 months. Water slops out of bowls, but this gel stays put — and it’s 95% water. It’s ideal for dogs traveling in crates in a plane’s cargo area, but it’s also a great idea for dogs accompanying hikers and bikers. Take some along on your next boat trip or car trip, as a back-up in case you run  … Read more
