I had previously stayed at Kimpton hotels in Portland — the Hotel Monaco, which I’ve reviewed, and the Kimpton RiverPlace Hotel, which I haven’t — but my uncle is a devoted fan of the Mark Spencer Hotel, and finally persuaded me to give it a try. Now I’m a fan too. The Mark Spencer is comfortable and stylish, the front desk staff could not have been kinder to Chloe or to us, and the hotel’s location (“where the West End meets the Pearl District”) … Read more

Oh, it’s a mixed bag this week. I can point you to a totally charming story about dogs (and cats) cleverly using Russian and British public transit to visit favorite food sources — but I also have to tell you about an unpleasant incident on a London Midland train, where a passenger and her West Highland White Terrier were both bitten by “a small terrier” belonging to another passenger. Please note, by the way, that London Midland runs trains “throughout the … Read more
This collection of dog travel links is all about destinations, starting with — why not? — the San Francisco Bay Area. Reader Joan pointed me to Dining with Sophie, a site she found useful when she was visiting S.F. recently with her two dogs. Check out its listings of dog-friendly shops and “restaurants that have outdoor seating areas where pets are welcome.”
Dropping south, the Los Angeles Times posted a list of TripAdvisor‘s top-rated pet-friendly properties in the U.S., including B&Bs … Read more
This episode of Chloe’s Clicks is long overdue, but I think that just makes it tastier, like giving the lemons more time to infuse the grain alcohol. The oldest link is from Huffington Post, and points you to five dog-friendly hiking trails in and around Los Angeles. Also from Huff Post? A post about three dog-friendly hotels in Portland, OR — I’d add to the list the Heathman Hotel, our favorite, and the funky Ace Hotel.
In the Bay Area, the … Read more
Thank you to everyone who entered the giveaway I announced last Monday for a fully-loaded Citizen Canine dog-walking hip pack! I loved your recommendations for dog-friendly restaurants, attractions and hotels — which I’ll list below, so they’re more easily found than in the comments on the giveaway post — and I loved your enthusiasm. Several of you entered the giveaway in every way possible, and many of you sent in three or four entries.
The winner, in fact, is one of … Read more
Jane is a long-time friend of Dog Jaunt — she won a giveaway last year, and Emma, her Norfolk Terrier, was featured in a Photo Friday earlier this year. This summer, the family vacationed in New Hampshire and Maine, and Jane sent pictures and a report, which begins in “the heart of the White Mountains,” in Jackson, NH:
We stayed at the Christmas Farm Inn and they were very dog friendly. Emma was not allowed in the main inn, but we … Read more
This is a guest post from Portland-based travel writer Jessica Spiegel. Jessica is the Italy travel expert at BootsnAll, the RTW travel resource, but she’ll gush just as much about Portland as she will about Italy — especially when it comes to the food.
Portland is the kind of city that doesn’t really attract vacationers. The people who come here from out of town are, more often than not, scouting it out as a place to live. And who could blame … Read more
Two weeks ago, the news was about Maryland’s Dining Out Growth Act of 2011, which would let Maryland restaurants welcome patrons accompanied by dogs to outdoor dining areas. It looks very much as though the Maryland General Assembly has approved the measure, clearing the way for Maryland restaurant owners to join their Florida, California and Minnesota colleagues. This week’s news, per krqe.com, is that New Mexico may add itself to the list. Which state will be next?
Here’s a dog-friendly restaurant … Read more
This week’s collection of dog travel links begins with a post from petswelcome.com describing favorite dog-friendly restaurants in Charlotte (North Carolina), San Francisco, New York City, and Austin (Texas).
Thinking of winter getaways? Fido’s City Guide has suggestions for a cozy visit to the Oregon coast, staying at Canon Beach and shopping in Seaside, and A Brooklyn Dog’s Life visited the dog-friendly Emerson Resort & Spa in the Hudson Valley, about three hours from NYC. If you’re looking for warm, darn … Read more
Hey, I’m not late! It’s still the weekend here in Seattle…. It’s been a very miscellaneous week in dog travel links, so I’ll just dive in — starting, in fact, here in Seattle. The wonderful ohmidog! team of John and Ace visited Seattle and Portland recently, and gave “the hipster seal of approval” to the dog-friendly Ace Hotels (the other two are in New York and Palm Springs). The author sends up a plea to guides listing dog-friendly hotels, whether … Read more
