Reader’s report: The XL SturdiBag, in-cabin carrier for a tall Miniature Poodle

As I’ve said before, it’s easy to travel with a small pet dog (say, under 10 lbs.), and it’s pretty easy to travel with a pet Chloe’s size (she has variously weighed 13-16 lbs., and stands 12″ tall at the shoulder). But what about pets weighing more than 16 lbs., or measuring more than 12″ tall at the shoulder? This week, reader Amy reports on making the extra-large SturdiBag work for her tall Miniature Poodle, with some useful modifications and  … Read more

Reader’s report: Modifying a Pettom Expandable pet carrier, flying in-cabin on Air Canada

Keri and I corresponded earlier this year, when she asked if I thought the Teafco Argo Petagon carrier might work for Flint, her “tall mini poodle with bigggggg hair and long legs.” I pointed her to my review of it, which she’d already seen, and confirmed that I thought it’d be a good match. Keri said she’d report back, and bless her, this week she did. Turns out that she chose an entirely different carrier, modified it in a fascinating  … Read more

Reader’s report: Zurich to JFK, on SWISS, with an in-cabin dog

My heartfelt thanks to reader Anja, who gathered in one relatively short e-mail a wealth of useful information about her recent SWISS (formerly Swiss Air) flight from Zurich to New York’s JFK airport with Dr. Pepper, her Poodle — including real-life info about traveling via SWISS, under seat space on a SWISS Airbus A330-300, and the location and condition of JFK’s outdoor pet relief area at Terminal 4. Here’s her report:

Taking an in-cabin dog on SWISS

Reader’s report: Large SturdiBag on a Southwest 737-700 plane

Here’s another photo to share with you of a large SturdiBag in position under a plane seat, thanks to reader Kathy. She posted a message this week on Dog Jaunt’s Facebook page, telling me that she’d taken Theodore, her 13 year-old Toy Poodle, on his first plane flight, and all went well — and she was extra-relieved, because Theodore is “a delicate little guy.”

They flew on a Southwest 737-700 series plane, in a middle seat, and Kathy bought the large  … Read more

Photo Friday: Poop bag from Japan

Two Fridays ago, I posted reader Kate’s picture of a Czech poop bag, and today I have one for you from Japan, thanks to reader Deena. Here’s what she wrote:

“I wanted to add to your poop bag photo collection by sending photos of poop bags in Japan! These attached are of a brand of poop bags called ‘Poita-kun’ which are very popular with dog owners here. The bag has a layer of paper towel-like material on the outside,  … Read more

Reader’s report: Scoop law sign from Amsterdam, and living with a pet in the Netherlands

Reader Melissa kindly sent me this shot from, I think, Amsterdam (you’ll see why I think that in a moment):

“Niet op de stoep” means, I now know, “not on the sidewalk” in Dutch. You see similar warnings elsewhere in Europe, and they’re just so baffling. Who can predict when their dog will feel the urge to purge? It seems more sensible to acknowledge that sidewalk poop happens, and to address, instead, the issue of picking it up and  … Read more
