Reader’s report: Dog-friendly cruise on the Rhine and Mosel Rivers

Last July, I wrote a post about a company offering dog-friendly river cruises in Europe. Reader Jenna had brought the cruises to my attention, and last fall she and Tara, her French Bulldog, went on one. I met Jenna and Tara in person in October 2013, when they hosted me and Chloe for breakfast in Paris — which was just as elegant as it sounds. Jenna writes a wonderful Facebook page about their travels, and kindly agreed to contribute this post to Dog Jaunt.

Reader’s report: Dog-friendly river cruises in Germany, Holland

The fact is, it’s hard to find dog-friendly sailing/cruising opportunities, unless you own your own boat or can talk your way onto a friend’s boat. They exist, don’t despair (never despair!), but they’re rare. I list several in Bone Voyage, my book about dog travel — and isn’t it time you bought yourself a copy? — but this week I learned from reader Jenna that the German company 1AVista Reisen offers four different river cruises focusing on travelers with pet dogs (though guests  … Read more

Pet policies of the castles, gardens and palaces along Castle Road (Burgenstraße)

Just over a month ago, I posted a list of all the châteaux in the Loire Valley and provided what information I could gather about their pet policies. I didn’t, but I had wonderful memories of castle-hopping in  … Read more

Eurostar trains are not pet-friendly, but the U.K., European trains they connect to are

Last week we got word of a new effort to get pets back on Amtrak trains — in a limited way, mind you: the Pets on Trains Act of 2013 [PDF] would allow only small pets in carriers on a single, designated car per train, and larger pets in crates in the cargo area, on trips under 750 miles. It’s an excellent start, however, and I urge you to join me in telling your congressperson you support the Act. Among the  … Read more

Chloe’s Clicks: This week’s best dog travel links

This collection of dog travel links is all about destinations, starting with — why not? — the San Francisco Bay Area. Reader Joan pointed me to Dining with Sophie, a site she found useful when she was visiting S.F. recently with her two dogs. Check out its listings of dog-friendly shops and “restaurants that have outdoor seating areas where pets are welcome.”

Dropping south, the Los Angeles Times posted a list of TripAdvisor‘s top-rated pet-friendly properties in the U.S., including B&Bs  … Read more
