I took this week’s photo last Friday, as Chloe and I rode the ferry from Anacortes to San Juan Island’s Friday Harbor. Although dogs are allowed upstairs if they’re in a carrier, and the view from upstairs is really lovely, I typically stretch out in the car and snooze. Usually Chloe sleeps in my lap, but this time she curled up in the passenger seat.
As you know, I’m giving goodies away over the next several Photo Fridays! After the photo, I’ll … Read more
This week’s photo is courtesy of my husband, who flew from Seattle to Friday Harbor last weekend a seat or two behind Bentley the Boxer, who (he learned) is a frequent flyer on Kenmore Air.
After the photo, read all about this week’s giveaway — I’ll be giving goodies away over the next several Photo Fridays!
Please send me your favorite dog travel photos! They’ll get listed below, for everyone to click on and view — and they’ll give you a chance … Read more

We’ve been going to San Juan Island since 1999, and we love it. We love the ferry ride, which threads through a constellation of islands (collectively called “the San Juans,” they include three other big islands — Orcas, Lopez and Shaw — and dozens of small ones), and we love Friday Harbor, the main town on San Juan Island. It’s a cheerful hurly-burly in the summertime, and it’s restful and mellow the rest of the year. All … Read more
Today’s photo is a couple of weeks old, taken at South Beach on San Juan Island. Leashed dogs are allowed on the beach, but bring your own poop bags. Chloe loves this place, largely because there are slow-moving shore birds to chase (still, they’re faster than she is). We love it because it’s windy and exhilarating, and on a really clear day you can see all the way to Mt. Rainier.
Please send me links to your favorite dog … Read more
It’s grey and rainy in Seattle, so we decided to pack up the dog and our most challenging cat (why torture our housesitter?) and head north to San Juan Island and Friday Harbor. It’s grey and rainy there too, but at least the view is different. Chloe loves going to Friday Harbor. I don’t know if she secretly yearns for a life on the rolling sea, or if she just likes chasing gulls instead of crows, but she’s always thrilled … Read more
The Eddie & Friends Dog Park on San Juan Island occupies two acres next to Browne’s Home Center on Mullis Avenue (and is named after the Brownes’ dog Eddie). The turn is easy to miss (if you get to the fire station, you’ve gone too far), but leads to generous off-street parking.
The park is completely fenced, with two sets of double doors leading into a big dog area and a separate small ‘n’ shy area. The big dog area has … Read more
One of our nieces got married this weekend at the Lakedale Resort on San Juan Island, and I hardly had eyes for the bride. What a beautiful place! The 82-acre, 3-lake property includes a variety of lodging options: a 10-room lodge, a 3-bedroom Lake House, six 2-bedroom log cabins, thirteen canvas cabins for lakeside “glamping,” a vintage Airstream trailer, and numerous campsites. Dogs of any size are welcome in the log cabins and in the campsites. The full pet policy … Read more
Friday Harbor has a great pet store, called Friday Harbor Pet Supplies. It’s packed with all the high-end, healthy dog food, treats, toys, chews and grooming supplies you could wish for, and the owner (Annie Hutton) is a delight. Open Tues. to Fri. 10 am to 6 pm; Sat. 10 am to 5 pm.

Kenmore Air has a fleet of seaplanes and land-based planes, and serves lots of useful destinations in the Pacific Northwest (including Seattle; the San Juan Islands; the Olympic Peninsula; Victoria, B.C.; and Canada’s Vancouver Island and Gulf Islands). It is my husband’s favorite way of getting to Friday Harbor (45 minutes from Seattle, as opposed to our usual 3-hour schlep via car and ferry), so we were thrilled to learn that Kenmore allows small dogs on its flights.
They have a … Read more
