Reader’s report: Modifying a Pettom Expandable pet carrier, flying in-cabin on Air Canada

Keri and I corresponded earlier this year, when she asked if I thought the Teafco Argo Petagon carrier might work for Flint, her “tall mini poodle with bigggggg hair and long legs.” I pointed her to my review of it, which she’d already seen, and confirmed that I thought it’d be a good match. Keri said she’d report back, and bless her, this week she did. Turns out that she chose an entirely different carrier, modified it in a fascinating  … Read more

Reader’s report: Zurich to JFK, on SWISS, with an in-cabin dog

My heartfelt thanks to reader Anja, who gathered in one relatively short e-mail a wealth of useful information about her recent SWISS (formerly Swiss Air) flight from Zurich to New York’s JFK airport with Dr. Pepper, her Poodle — including real-life info about traveling via SWISS, under seat space on a SWISS Airbus A330-300, and the location and condition of JFK’s outdoor pet relief area at Terminal 4. Here’s her report:

Large, but still workable, in-cabin pet carrier: Teafco Argo Petagon

Those of you who follow Dog Jaunt’s Facebook page will know that I first saw this carrier in a celebrity shot in the Daily Mail: Julianne Hough was carrying it through an airport, and my eyes lit up because in it was a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel just like Chloe.

Workable in-cabin carriers for larger small dogs are rare. I figured out the bag’s brand and model, bought one, and took it on a flight —  … Read more

Reader’s report: Custom Celltei carrier for Franny the Corgi

I have mentioned Celltei’s custom carriers in the past (they made a gigantic combination wheeled/backpack carrier for a 50 lb. dog, for travel on NYC’s subway system), but I have yet to check them out for myself. I was grateful, therefore, to hear from reader Courtney about the custom carrier she ordered from Celltei for Franny, her 19 lb. Cardigan Welsh Corgi — especially because I’ve just learned that the expandable carrier I typically recommend to folks with really large  … Read more

Which seat works best with an in-cabin dog? [Virgin America A-319]

We fly on Virgin America several times a year, but always, to date, on one of their Airbus 320 planes, never on an A-319. In fact, I’d concluded they only had A-320s, so my tape measure was well of out reach when I saw the A-319 emergency card. Here’s what I used as an alternative, which proves that where there’s a will, there’s a way:

That middle hieroglyphic, for example, means that the middle seat space was 2 card-widths wide  … Read more

Reader’s report: Under-seat space on a Delta A-319 (First Class)

This is a quick post courtesy of reader Danielle, who sent a report via Dog Jaunt’s Facebook page about her recent trip with new pup Addison on a Delta A-319. She kindly agreed that I could repost the info and her picture here, so it wouldn’t scroll away into the Facebook ether.

I have traveled with Chloe on a Delta A-319 in the past, and reported about the under-seat spaces I encountered, but I was in the Coach section — and  … Read more

Reader’s report: Taking Spock to Berlin, from Miami, via Lufthansa

Simone first wrote to me back in April, to tell me that she was planning to take Spock, her 14-15 lb. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, from Miami to Berlin, via Frankfurt, on Lufthansa, and needed a pep talk about logistics. I cheered her on, and asked if she’d let me know how her trip went — and sure enough, she sent a marvelous report, packed with pictures of Spock in Berlin.

A little background: Spock was 8 months old in April,  … Read more

Pet carrier picture: Large SturdiBag on Virgin America A320

I’ve reported before about the dimensions of the under-seat space available (in the main cabin) on a Virgin America A-320, but I neglected to take a picture of Chloe’s carrier in position. This time, I got the shot. Please note that I was sitting in Seat 14C, an aisle seat in the main cabin (here’s a floor map of a VA A320 for your reference):

Large SturdiBag (with Chloe inside — you can just see her nose) in the under-seat  … Read more

Reader’s report: Ralph in Paris (including ID tag approach)

Remember the photo I posted, one Friday, of Ralph the Bichon/Cavalier dressed for his upcoming trip to Paris? Reader Anne sent pictures from their visit, along with details about her solution for keeping Ralph’s ID current while they were out of the country.

The first news I got from Anne was that they had used the pet relief area at JFK’s Terminal 4, and that when they boarded their plane (a Delta Airbus 330-200, which has a 2-4-2 seat configuration), she  … Read more

Reader’s report: Phoenix to Madrid on American and Iberia with Louie the Bichon

Long ago, reader Ana asked if I had any suggestions for airlines that fly from Phoenix to Madrid and have planes that allow in-cabin dogs under their Business Class seats. Nothing came to mind (all I could do was warn her that often the higher-grade seats don’t accommodate pets, since the under-seat space is occupied by electronics boxes for fancy features), and I asked her to let me know what she learned.

She kindly wrote back with details about her trip.  … Read more
