Which seat works best with an in-cabin dog? [United 777-200 WW2]

We recently flew on a United 777 Overwater from Washington-Dulles to Charles de Gaulle. According to SeatGuru, the 777-200 we traveled on is called a “Worldwide 2” (WW2). I was in seat 21A, in Economy Plus, and my husband was in seat 13H, in Business (we had to sit separately, since Chloe was not allowed to travel in Business). Once again, I strongly recommend paying extra for Economy Plus. My seat was cramped enough, especially given the way Chloe’s carrier had to be stowed; I can imagine only too easily how uncomfortable it would have been to travel in Economy.

Chloe's carrier, past my left leg

The under-seat spaces in Economy Plus all had some kind of obstruction except for the E seats (the very middle seat). That seat alone had a clear, wide under-seat space, and would have fit Chloe’s carrier easily in the orientation I prefer (left to right). It’s cruel traveling in the very middle, however, so I didn’t complain about my window seat. The under-seat spaces for seats A&B and H&J are, oddly, combined into one space, with obstructions on each side reducing the usable under-seat space to  23″ wide. Putting Chloe’s carrier left-to-right, therefore, would have left almost no space for my neighbor’s feet. Instead, for once, I oriented Chloe’s carrier front-to-back. It stuck out about 5 inches, but the flight attendants didn’t object. Given the other under-seat obstructions, I would have had to do the same thing in seats C, D, F and G.

The under-seat space on this plane, at least in Economy Plus, is 10 inches tall. As you can see in the picture, Chloe traveled in her large SturdiBag, and it was a good choice for this flight.

This post is part of an ongoing series recording under-seat measurements of the various planes we fly on. Keep in mind that most domestic and international airlines have rules about the maximum size of in-cabin pet carriers they allow on board (see Dog Jaunt’s handy charts under the “Guides” tab above).

We are scheduled at this time to take this particular airplane back from Germany to United States. I have two cats, and they both have the Sherpa Deluxe Medium Bags. Do you think both bags will fit under the seats, side by side, in the Economy plus? We have seats on the side (two seats together). My husband and I are travelling together, so there is no problem taking both of the cats, and we already have a reservation.

  • Hello, Poshcat! I think that will work, indeed, but you’ll need to orient your carriers front-to-back instead of left-to-right. I’ve been doing that a lot recently, so I can easily reach into Chloe’s carrier, and so far the flight attendants have let me get away with it. On an international flight, I suspect they’d be especially kind to pet owners (and pets!). You’re a wise woman to go with Economy Plus — Economy’s do-able, but oh, the misery with a pet under your feet. Safe travels!
