This is a two-part update, and I owe both parts to reader Giuliana, who wrote first to tell me that JetBlue now allows you to reserve an in-cabin spot for your pet online. As of at least June 16, the language on JetBlue’s JetPaws page stated that “Pets can be booked online or you can call 1-800-JETBLUE (538-2583).”

Alerted by reader Mia, I just called U.S. Airways to talk about the airline’s in-cabin pet policy. The customer service representative I spoke to confirmed that today, U.S. Air increased its fee for in-cabin pets to $125 each way (it had previously been $100). That’s unfortunate, but not unexpected, given that United, Continental and American all charge $125 for in-cabin pets.

This is just a quick post to highlight a recent change in Allegiant’s pet policy. In another post, I’ve mentioned the problem you sometimes run into when you make your plane reservation on-line: If you’re not able to add your pet to your reservation on-line (and most airlines don’t yet allow you to do that), you run the risk of calling to add your pet to your reservation and learning that all the spaces for in-cabin pets on your flight … Read more
Virgin America now allows you to add your pet to your on-line reservation, “either during booking or by clicking ‘Anything Else?’ when viewing your itinerary.” That’s rare — of the major U.S. airlines, only Continental has a similar system in place (Northwest used to).

It costs an arm and a leg to bring your dog with you in an airplane cabin, but JetBlue sweetens the pill by adding 300 points to your TrueBlue frequent flyer account for each flight you take accompanied by your pet. That’s pretty generous (it’s as much a person earns taking a short JetBlue flight, e.g., from JFK to Buffalo). It’s also unique: No other U.S. airline offers a sweetener to passengers paying for in-cabin pets.
Continental Airlines also allows on-line reservations for pets that will travel in-cabin with you — and unlike Northwest, Continental allows you to add the pet to your initial Flight Search, so that the list of flights that are ultimately offered to you for consideration can all accommodate your dog (the flights that aren’t eligible for in-cabin pet travel are marked in red).
