Which seat works best with an in-cabin dog? [United 737-800/900]

Traveling from Seattle to Tampa recently, Chloe and I occupied the same seat (8F) on two different Boeing 737-800/900 series planes. Please note that that’s an Economy Plus seat — while the under-seat spaces are the same throughout the Coach section, Economy Plus gives you a few more inches of pitch, so you can reach down to your pet more easily. If your budget allows it, it makes a world of difference.

Here’s a seat map from SeatGuru so you can  … Read more

Reader’s report: Sleepypod Air (and Olive!) on a United 737-900 plane

This started out as a post on Dog Jaunt’s Facebook page, but reader Marie kindly agreed that I could repost it here on the blog, where it wouldn’t scroll away. Olive is a cross between a Sealyham Terrier and a Connemara Jack Russell Terrier (officially, a “Heritage Connemara Jack Russell,” part of a project to ensure the survival of the Irish Jack Russell). Marie bought the Sleepypod Air (here’s my review of it) in the dark chocolate color — very pretty,  … Read more

Reader’s report: Large SturdiBag on a Southwest 737-700 plane

Here’s another photo to share with you of a large SturdiBag in position under a plane seat, thanks to reader Kathy. She posted a message this week on Dog Jaunt’s Facebook page, telling me that she’d taken Theodore, her 13 year-old Toy Poodle, on his first plane flight, and all went well — and she was extra-relieved, because Theodore is “a delicate little guy.”

They flew on a Southwest 737-700 series plane, in a middle seat, and Kathy bought the large  … Read more

Reader’s report: Medium Teafco Argo Petascope carrier on a Delta 767 plane

The Teafco Argo Petascope is a handsome carrier, but long ago I’d decided that only the small size would work in-cabin — and at 18″L x 10.5″W x 9″H, it’s too small for Chloe. A friend of Dog Jaunt’s though, reported on Twitter that she’d traveled successfully on a Delta 767 with Hondo, her mixed-breed pup, in a medium-sized Petascope (23″L x 11.5″W x 11.5″H). She kindly agreed that I could post her picture and info on Dog Jaunt:

Which seat works best with an in-cabin dog? [United 767-300]

I’d never flown on a 767 before, and I still can’t decide, two days later, what I thought of the experience. What I do know is that getting a seat in at least Economy Plus is crucial for an international flight with a pet: I walked past the Economy seats on my trip to the bathroom, and the pitch was something terrible. I don’t think I could have managed to reach down to Chloe in the space available.

Happily, I was  … Read more

Photo of Chloe’s large SturdiBag on a United 757-200

Too many times in the past, I posted airplane under-seat measurements without including a picture of Chloe’s carrier installed under my seat, but slowly I’m filling in the missing pieces. Today’s photos are of her carrier on a United 757-200. For the measurements of that under-seat space, see this earlier post.

The first photo is of her large SturdiBag under an Economy Plus window seat on the port side of the plane (Seat 9A):

I chose to orient her carrier front-to-back, so  … Read more

Pet carrier picture: Large SturdiBag on Virgin America A320

I’ve reported before about the dimensions of the under-seat space available (in the main cabin) on a Virgin America A-320, but I neglected to take a picture of Chloe’s carrier in position. This time, I got the shot. Please note that I was sitting in Seat 14C, an aisle seat in the main cabin (here’s a floor map of a VA A320 for your reference):

Large SturdiBag (with Chloe inside — you can just see her nose) in the under-seat  … Read more

Reader’s report: Under-seat space on a Delta MD-90 (First Class), and Sherpa Delta carrier

Reader Lena sent me a message reporting on the under-seat space she and Penny, her Cava-Poo-Chon, encountered on their recent flight on a Delta MD-90. They traveled in First Class — always a potential risk, but it worked well for them. Please note that Penny was in the Sherpa Delta Deluxe carrier (the same one we used to bring our cat Cora home from Ohio). Recall that it measures 18″ long, 11″ wide, and 10.5″ tall.

Here’s Penny, currently almost 8 months old  … Read more

Reader’s report: Under-seat space on a United 757 (First Class), and a smart alternative to a wheeled carrier

I was surprised to read this message, since my husband’s walk-by view of a United 757-200’s under-seat space in First Class had been deeply discouraging. Reader Anne reports, however, that she and Erin, her black & tan Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, both traveled comfortably in First Class on a United 757.

They flew from Washington D.C. to San Francisco (heading to a dog show in Carmel). Erin, at 15 lbs., fits nicely in a large SturdiBag:

I’m not a bit surprised  … Read more

Photo Friday: Daisy, in a large SturdiBag, under the seat of a Southwest 737-800 plane

I have flown with Chloe on a Southwest 737-800, but while I remembered a tape measure, I hadn’t yet figured out that it would be a good idea to include a picture of Chloe’s carrier (in that case, her large SturdiBag) in my post about the available space. Thankfully, Dog Jaunt has sensible readers, including Claire, who traveled either to or from Phoenix on a Southwest 737-800 plane with Daisy, her tricolor Cavalier, and sent a picture:
