Reader’s report: Departing the U.K. with an in-cabin pet

Visiting the U.K. with a small pet is a good news/bad news situation. You start with good news: Back in 2012, the quarantine rules changed and it’s now no harder to meet the U.K.’s import requirements than it is to meet those of the rest of the European Union (well, with some differences, including a requirement that dogs be treated for tapeworm not less than 24 hours and not more than 120 hours before arriving in the U.K.).… Read the rest

Sun Country: Pet fee price hike (and an ugly twist on the walk-up)

I learned this morning that Sun Country has changed its in-cabin pet policy in two ways. Previously, they’d said their in-cabin space for pets was “limited” — now there’s a maximum of 4 pets per flight. At the same time, they hiked their pet fee from $100 each way to $125 (for an “advance conditional reservation”) and $199 (for passengers who don’t have an advance reservation).… Read the rest

Adding your in-cabin dog to your plane reservation: The major U.S. airlines

When I first started writing this post, my main concern was that most U.S. airlines won’t allow you to add your pet to your reservation on-line, so either you make your reservation and quickly call to add your dog (hoping that one of the limited number of in-cabin spaces is available), or you call to make your reservation and risk being charged an extra fee, and possibly losing out on on-line-only deals or bonus frequent flyer credits.… Read the rest

Making a reservation on Allegiant with an in-cabin dog

This is just a quick post to highlight a recent change in Allegiant’s pet policy. In another post, I’ve mentioned the problem you sometimes run into when you make your plane reservation on-line: If you’re not able to add your pet to your reservation on-line (and most airlines don’t yet allow you to do that), you run the risk of calling to add your pet to your reservation and learning that all the spaces for in-cabin pets on your flight are already taken.… Read the rest

Reader’s report: Traveling by plane with two in-cabin dogs

This was originally sent to me as an e-mail message by a reader named Carole, who lives in Spain and Turkey (but has also lived in the U.S. and other locations, and has traveled extensively, as you’ll see). I have long wanted a second Cavalier King Charles Spaniel — I’ve even chosen her name (Flora, after the heroine of Cold Comfort Farm).Read the rest

Flying with an in-cabin dog: Adding a dog to your plane reservation

A couple of days ago, we bought tickets on JetBlue to travel to New York City later this summer. I have to go to a conference, we both want to see some friends — five days should cover it, right? Well, it’s a six-day trip now, because after I made our on-line reservations I called back to add Chloe to my ticket (as I always do), and learned that our outgoing flight already had its full complement of in-cabin pets (all airlines, except Allegiant, have a limited number of available spaces; only four in-cabin pets are allowed on JetBlue flights).… Read the rest
