Finding a dog-friendly vacation rental

There are lots of vacation rental sites out there, so how do you choose among them? The local rental agencies I’ve used in Paris and Rome worked out fine, but didn’t make it easy to tell if a property is pet-friendly (on the other hand, the staff did respond rapidly to e-mail inquiries). Two of the bigger sites, however, do make it easy to identify pet-friendly properties, and they have inventory around the world. A good friend has used VRBO — Vacation Rentals by Owner several times, and is enthusiastic about her experiences, and a travel blogger I trust recommends HomeAway.

The two sites are related (HomeAway bought VRBO a few years ago), so it’s not surprising that both sites include “pet friendly” as a subcategory. HomeAway, however, makes it easier to identify pet-friendly properties.

On VRBO, you click on a couple of maps to narrow down your choices, then select among a list of city/location names to make your final choice. The properties that your search yields either have a blue paw icon (pet-friendly!) or a grayed-out paw icon (not!) — you have to scroll down through the list and look for the blue paws. HomeAway, by contrast, presents you with a final list of possibles that are all pet-friendly. First click on the map to choose a region, then choose among a list of cities/locations. The next page offers you the chance to “refine your search;” in that column, under “Accessibility,” click on “pet friendly.”

Great website with great information! I rent flats in Paris and have used LOGIS a couple of times and they have many dog-friendly listings for long, mid and short term furnished rentals. However, when you actually sign the contract they ask you the specific breed of the dog, so I don’t know if they are ALL dog friendly or just the cute and tiny ones like yours. :-)

    Keep up the great work,

Emily and Brogan (the not-so-small-and-fluffy traveling Rottweiler)

Thanks so much for your comment! How useful! I’m going to take a look at LOGIS right now — a girl can dream, right?
